The Presidents Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition has selected Dr. Angela Fals, medical director of AdventHealth for Children's Weight Management Program, to receive a 2016 Presidents Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Community Leadership Award. The award is given annually to individuals or organizations who improve the lives of others within their community by providing or enhancing opportunities to engage in sports, physical activities, fitness, and nutrition-related programs.

Fals specializes in helping children gain control of their weight, avoid a lifetime of obesity and make healthy choices that not only affects their weight, but also their self-esteem and overall health.

As founder of the Center for Child and Family Wellness, Fals works with experts in nutrition, exercise and child psychology to help youth and their families. She sits on several boards and works with one local school to develop a culture of wellness that includes students and staff.

Dr. Fals has worked to consistently promote opportunities for individuals to lead healthy lifestyles through physical activity and/or healthy nutrition, says Shellie Pfohl, Executive Director of the Office of the Presidents Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Because of Fals efforts and contributions, her community can embrace a more active lifestyle. Together, we are all working to make our nation a healthier one by helping individuals across the nation live vibrant, vivacious, and productive lives.

Dr. Fals is an exceptional physician, and we are thrilled she has received this prestigious recognition, said Marla Silliman, senior executive officer of AdventHealth for Children. Dr. Fals was one of the first pediatricians to specialize in pediatric bariatric medicine, and has dedicated her life to helping families and communities who are struggling with obesity. From research to her work in local schools, Dr. Fals is impacting countless lives.

This year, in honor of its 60th Anniversary, the Presidents Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition presented the Community Leadership Award to 60 recipients across the country for making sports, physical activity, fitness, and nutrition-related programs available in their communities.
