Meet Our Mom: Elaine T

Elaine T and her family

The following is a first-person account of a real family's labor and delivery experience at AdventHealth for Women.

My name is Elaine T. and I delivered my son on June 1, 2019 at AdventHealth for Women. I'm a mom to a nine-year-old girl, so it was like starting all over and trying to remember what to expect during my pregnancy. Since I am over 35 years of age my pregnancy was considered high-risk. Although I was considered high-risk I felt that this pregnancy was easier than my first.

I was under the care of Dr. Ashley Hill and his team at AdventHealth Medical Group OBGYN at Orlando (formerly Loch Haven OBGYN) along with a Maternal Fetal Care Specialist. I was referred to Dr. Hill's office by my Primary Care Doctor who had delivered her five children with them. I knew after my first visit to the practice that I had made the right choice in doctors. After our second visit to the OBGYN, I scheduled a tour of The Baby Place at AdventHealth for Women. Within the first 10 minutes of the tour I knew I had made the right choice in hospitals, too. The place is beautiful! The delivery and recovery rooms are both spacious and comfortable. There are two other hospitals closer to me, but I opted to make the drive just to deliver here!

My pregnancy was without any challenges and seemed to fly by. I was recommended not to go past 39 weeks and would have to schedule an induction if my baby did not arrive prior to that. Well, he didn't come by 39 weeks, so we scheduled the induction for May 31st at 7:30 am. I arrived at 7:15 and was on my way to the delivery floor within 10 minutes. Upon arrival, my nurse was Janette who was very personable and obviously enjoyed her work. That evening Janette was relieved by Chrissy who would ultimately be with us during delivery. Again, we could tell that Chrissy loved her job just by her demeanor and level of patient care. The delivery unit was busy that night, but one would never know it. The place was quiet, and the nursing staff made you feel like their only patient. We had two instances where my baby’s heart rate dropped significantly, and Chrissy came in with four other nurses to put me in different positions to see if that would bring the babies heart rate back into a normal range. You could see Dr. Hill working in tandem with Chrissy and the other nurses! Reflecting back, it was a beautiful thing to see!

Once we delivered our son, we were moved into the Mother/Baby unit which was just as busy however, one would never have realized it! We were lucky to have Lexi as our nurse for two days. She spent a lot of time ensuring mommy and baby were doing well and comfortable. Again, you could tell Lexi enjoyed her job and it showed.

Giving birth can be and is a stressful time in one’s life. However, the nurses, doctors, and hospital support staff go out of their way to relieve you of that stress and allow you to take in the special moment of bringing a life into this world. Although AdventHealth for Women is a beautiful hospital, it would be nothing more than a pretty building if not for the wonderful people who call this workplace home! Thank you, Janette, Chrissy, Lexi, Dr. Hill, and AdventHealth for Women, for making my birth experience so memorable!
