Meet Our Mom: Tanya D

Tanya and her Husband with their two girls

The following is a first-person account of a real family's labor and delivery experience at AdventHealth for Women.

My name is Tanya D. and I delivered my twin baby girls at AdventHealth for Women last year. My husband Chase and I discussed the possibility of having children and to be honest didn't know if that was even possible from prior medical guidance we had received. We found out that we were pregnant at an ER visit to AdventHealth Winter Garden one night in September. I had been in a lot of pain and finally had enough so to the Emergency Room we went. When we found out we were having a baby it came as quite a shock, but we were super excited. After tests and an examination, the doctor on call that night informed us that I was pregnant – not only with one baby but with twins.

You can just imagine the shock factor involved in that moment! At my 16-week check up with AdventHealth Medical Group High Risk Pregnancy’s Dr. Lindsay Maggio, we learned that I possibly had TTTS (Twin Twin Transfusion Syndrome) so they sent me to consult with a surgeon. Fortunately, I did not end up having this case but would need to be monitored on a weekly basis to ensure that I didn't develop it later in the pregnancy. They also noticed that Baby B (Kinsley) only had a two-vessel cord which would limit her ability to grow properly. As the weeks progressed, it was an emotional roller coaster between the doctor visits about possible genetic disorders, heart conditions, and even the possibility of miscarriage. It was to the point where they didn't think I would be able to keep both girls, they feared one would terminate during pregnancy. The doctor told me that I likely wouldn't carry the babies past 28 weeks, so I should be prepared for a hard road ahead.

However, I got to 33 weeks and 5 days before being admitted in the hospital for induction on April 5. The next day, Ainsley was born at 7:53am (3lbs 15 oz) and Kinsley was born at 8:02am (3lbs 1oz). I didn't end up needing a C-section, but the twins required NICU care because they were born before 35 weeks gestation. Ainsley stayed in the NICU for 32 days and Kinsley was there for 45 days. During their stay they received the best possible treatment available. The whole team was extremely nice and informative, they kept us up to date daily. Two of our NICU nurses, Heather and Elle, were especially great. They were such a joy to be around and I always knew that the twins were in good hands with them.

I couldn't have asked for a better team of professionals to care for my children and me. I would recommend AdventHealth for Women to everyone if I could. The girls are almost one year old now and are doing great! It was quite the adjustment going from no babies to having two; but, I wouldn't trade it for the world!
